Post-Graduate Work Permit
If you are an international student and have recently completed your studies, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — an open work permit that allows international graduates to work for any Canadian employer without needing a job offer.

What is a PGWP?
Post-graduation work permits are open work permits given to international students who graduate from a Canadian program of study. A PGWP allows the holder to work for any employer, for as many hours as they wish, anywhere in Canada. PGWPs are valid for between eight months and three years and are a great way to obtain valuable Canadian work experience.
Benefits of a PGWP
A major benefit is that it enables international graduates to gain professional work experience in Canada. This experience is helpful when applying for Canadian immigration — many of Canada's 100+ immigration programs reward candidates who have studied and/or worked in Canada. Generally, a PGWP holder needs one year of professional work experience (NOC 0, A or B) to become eligible for a permanent residence program.
Eligibility
- Completed studies in an academic, vocational or professional training program at least eight months long at an eligible DLI.
- The study program must lead to a degree, diploma or certificate.
- Held full-time student status in Canada during every academic session (some COVID-era exemptions applied).
- Received a transcript and an official letter from the eligible DLI confirming completion of the program.
Fees, Processing Time and How to Apply
- A PGWP can take from 2 weeks to 180 days to process. You may work in Canada while waiting, provided you applied before your student permit expired.
- Fees: $155 Open Work Permit Holder fee plus $100 Work Permit application fee.
- You have 180 days to apply from the date you completed all requirements of your program of study. Applications may now be submitted from within or outside Canada.
