Immigrate to Canada through Express Entry
Express Entry was designed to be fast: the vast majority of applications submitted through Express Entry are processed in less than six months. There is no faster pathway to become a permanent resident in Canada.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's main system for managing immigration applications from skilled workers. Introduced in 2015, it ranks candidates based on their personal profiles (age, education, work experience, language skills and other factors) using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and invites the highest-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence.
Eligibility Requirements
The general criteria to apply to Express Entry as a skilled worker include:
- Skilled work experience in an eligible occupation.
- Language ability of at least Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or French, proven by an approved test.
- Post-secondary education assessed against Canadian standards with an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score can be boosted by:
- Higher language proficiency in English and/or French.
- A master's degree or PhD.
- Canadian work or educational experience.
- A sibling who is a citizen or permanent resident living in Canada.
- A valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
- A nomination from a Provincial Nominee Program.
Documents you need
- A valid passport.
- Results from an approved language test (CELPIP-General or IELTS General for English; TEF or TCF for French), valid for up to two years.
- An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for education completed outside Canada.
Processing Time and Fees
An Express Entry profile is valid for one year. After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), PR applications are generally processed within six months. Submitting a profile is free, but candidates may incur costs for language exams, credential assessment and document translation. Government fees on approval include roughly $1,325 for the principal applicant, $1,325 for a spouse and $225 per dependent child.
Express Entry Programs
There are three programs aligned with the Express Entry system. Each program is designed for a different type of worker.
The most popular Express Entry-aligned program, receiving more than half of all invitations. To qualify, you need:
- Work experience: minimum of 12 months of full-time, skilled work experience.
- Language: score Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 on an approved language test.
- Education: minimum of Canadian high school education, or foreign equivalent.
- FSW points grid: score a minimum of 67 points on the FSW points grid.
